You may wonder if praying can really stop an anxiety attack. ?Can religion improve health?? This was the question asked by Newsweek (November 10, 2003). They went on to say that more than half of the med schools in the country are now offering courses like ?Spirituality and Medicine.? The reason is because is more patients are now requesting spiritual help as a part of their treatment.
Does this have anything to do with anxiety and panic attack? There is actually some evidence that spirituality coupled with church attendance has health benefits. The average life expectancy of church attendees is anywhere from 5 to 8 years longer than non church goers. What is more interesting for our purposes is that the likelihood of being less depressed was 131%.
When someone feels like they are about to have an anxiety attack, praying can help to bring them back in control, especially if they are religious by nature. Imagine feeling your pulse suddenly quicken, your heart begin to race, your breathing becoming faster and yet less effective. You begin to experience the symptoms of a panic attack, hyperventilation, lightheadedness, dizziness, or choking. You recognize these symptoms as the beginning of an anxiety attack.
What do you do when feel like you are about to have an anxiety attack or stop anxiety? Well, you could give in to the feelings, but you do not want to do that. Suppose that instead, you began to pray. What difference could that make? It could make all the difference.
Cognitive therapists work on the assumption that anxiety disorder is based on wrong belief. When belief are changed, then behavior, and feelings can be changed. Prayer has a lot to do with our beliefs. The Newsweek article said that 84% of Americans believe that prayer can make a difference in their health. In other word, most people believe that prayer makes a difference and it does.
Most people believe that praying makes a real and significant difference in their circumstances. Prayer also makes a difference in our belief. As we pray, we are opening ourselves up to the possibility that our circumstances could change. They often do as a result of prayer. Prayer at the onset of an anxiety attack could actually stop the panic attack from progressing. One of the main reasons for this is that panic attacks are built on a foundation of beliefs that our fears and worries will come true. Prayer challenges those thoughts by calling on a Higher Power to intervene.
Try this simple prayer next time you feel like you are about experience a panic attack:
“God, I feel afraid of what I am facing. I need Your help. I am coming to You because You are big enough to help me. You are too wise to make any mistakes and too loving to be unkind so I am trusting You to help me through the next 5 minutes. Thank you. Amen.?
